ABA Consumer’s Toolkit for Health Care Advance Planning

“If you are looking at this tool kit, you are either thinking of making a health care advance directive (such as a living will or durable power of attorney for health care), or you may have already signed one. In either case, you should be aware that just having a written advance directive by itself does not ensure that your wishes will be understood and respected. Studies have shown that standard advance directive forms do little to influence end-of-life decisions without: 1) informed, thoughtful reflection about your wishes and values, and 2) personal communication between you and your likely decision-makers before a crisis occurs.”

Lawyer Referral Service

Need a lawyer for something other than estate planning, trusts, elder law or probate?  The lawyer referral service operated as a non-profit service of the Maine State Bar Association can help you find one.  If you want a lawyer that other lawyers think is one of the best, check out The Best Lawyers in America list.  These organizations rate lawyers by category of practice, such as “Trust and Estate,” “Estate Planning” or “Elder Law.”  Thus, the lists tend to favor specialists; you are not likely to find a general practitioner (or a younger lawyer or one practicing in a small town) on the lists.  Martindale-Hubbell, the oldest lawyer rating service is more inclusive, rating lawyers as either Av, Bv or Cv.
